Papier d-Arménie is one of the oldest indoor air fresheners in paper form, produced in France since 1885. The slightly sweet scent of styrax resin neutralizes unpleasant odours in rooms. Armenian paper gets its unmistakable, fragrant scent from the resin of the real styrax tree (Styrax officinalis). The incense-like, balsamic fragrance is said to have purifying and antiseptic properties. The styrax resin (also known as benzoin) is dissolved in alcohol. The backing paper (from the FSC Forest Stewardship Council) is soaked in this solution for approx. 2 months and then immersed in a saline solution, which causes it to burn more slowly. To this day, Papier d-Arménie is still produced by hand in the Paris suburb of Montrouge using a complex process that takes several months. Since no ozone-depleting propellants are used, Armenian scented paper can be described as an environmentally friendly room deodorizer.
It is easy to use: the small strips are folded accordion-style, lit and immediately blown out again to slowly smoulder in an incense bowl or ashtray. The air in the room is improved and purified with a subtle fragrance
