Camembert de Normandie AOP
For many people, the name Camembert is the epitome of French cheese. Even before Camembert received the AOC/AOP seal of quality in 1983, it was the most copied cheese in the world. The cheese owes its existence to a legend. During the French Revolution, the farmer Marie Fontaine Harel from the village of Camembert (Normandy) gave shelter to a priest from Brie. This priest, who came from near Paris, initiated her into the secrets of traditional cheese-making. This alliance gave rise to what is probably the most famous cheese in the world, Camembert, although similar soft cheeses had in fact been produced in the Normandy region long before. The French Emperor Napoleon III helped Camembert achieve its breakthrough by placing it on the imperial court table and thus presenting it to all aristocratic circles around the world. In the second half of the 19th century, Camembert was able to establish itself on the markets in Paris and other parts of France thanks to the railroad. In 1890, the now common packaging in small round chipboard boxes was invented.
In France, red wines and cider are served with Camembert. Sweet varieties and young Merlot wines are recommended, but fruity white wines are also an excellent accompaniment.
